one-week introductory program
Program Overview
The Living Heritage: Tibetan Arts and Culture Program is a one-week learning experience designed for school groups, international participants, and adult learners who wish to engage meaningfully with Tibetan culture as a living tradition. Through focused artistic training, cultural exposure, and experiential learning, the program introduces participants to the richness of Tibetan arts and cultural values within a short yet impactful timeframe.
The program is hosted at Norbulingka, a living center where Tibetan arts and cultural traditions have been preserved and practiced for generations. Located on the mountain ridge of Dharamsala, Norbulingka offers a unique environment where artisans, scholars, and practitioners from Tibet, India, and around the world work together to sustain and transmit Tibetan cultural knowledge. Participants experience traditional Tibetan architecture, lifestyle, Himalayan flora, and a wide range of Tibetan crafts practiced in their authentic settings.
While this description outlines the one-week program, Norbulingka also offers extended two-week and one-month intensive programs for schools or individuals seeking deeper engagement.
Program Focus
The one-week program focuses primarily on three core areas of Tibetan visual arts, complemented by cultural and reflective activities that provide essential context.
Tibetan Thangka Painting
Participants are introduced to the foundation of traditional Tibetan thangka painting. Training includes proportional measurement systems, iconographic guidelines, and traditional sketching techniques. Participants practice drawing and coloring a Buddha image using classical methods.
Tibetan Wood Carving
This component introduces participants to the history, symbolism, and craftsmanship of Tibetan wood carving. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, participants learn about traditional tools and materials and practice carving classical Tibetan designs, with particular focus on the Eight Auspicious Symbols. Emphasis is placed on symbolism, precision, and cultural meaning.
Tibetan Wood Painting and Coloring Techniques
Participants receive instruction in traditional Tibetan wood painting, including surface preparation, traditional color application, and stylistic conventions. Practical sessions involve painting selected images—such as animals, flowers, birds, or other traditional motifs—helping participants understand the relationship between form, color, and symbolism within Tibetan artistic traditions.
Cultural and Educational Enrichment
In addition to visual arts training, the program includes guided cultural exposure and reflective learning. Participants visit important Tibetan religious and cultural institutions, take part in introductory Tibetan language activities (such as writing their names in Tibetan script), and engage in meditation sessions that promote focus, cultural values, and inner awareness. These elements situate artistic learning within the broader context of Tibetan cultural life.
Program Outcomes
By the end of the one-week program, participants will have:
• Gained introductory hands-on experience in Tibetan thangka painting, wood carving, and wood painting
• Developed an understanding of the cultural and symbolic foundations of Tibetan visual arts
• Experienced Tibetan cultural institutions and living traditions firsthand
• Built a meaningful personal connection to Tibetan heritage and creative expression
