Flowers in stylized forms appear widely from the 11th century onwards, forming the core of Tibetan decorative art. They embellish the background of thangkas and decorate furniture, murals, and carpets. Our brocade flower-patterned boxes are inspired by silk brocade patterns traditionally used to mount painted and appliquéd thangkas.

Craftsmanship

At Norbulingka, artists have revived a traditional Tibetan method of relief painting called kyumbur, which adds texture to thangka frescoes and household items. Kyumbur, with its relief effect, lifts motifs from their otherwise flat surfaces, bringing art to life.
